About the Artist
Jamie Gray Williams works mainly in large format oil and acrylic paintings that announce themselves firmly and unapologetically to the viewer. They are vivid, brash and delightful; wonderfully boisterous intrusions on the kind of marketable, sterile calm that dominates our lives. If paintings had perceptible volume, Jamie’s would be loud . On the contrary her work is not without moments of elegance, characterised by a distinct sense of movement, of flowing dynamics, that in one sense creates a chaotic point of tension. How long until this figure gives way? How long until it all collapses? In another, it’s an evocative expression of atmosphere and an indescribable wistfulness that stirs the senses in a totally different way.
The link between kinetic chaos and expressive fluidity can be traced back to the origins of Jamie’s work, which centres around intuitive, automatic drawing. In a single sitting she can produce dozens of sketches, some bursting the confinement of their own space and informing the roots of the next. During this process she says her figures “discover themselves”, an evocative statement that leans into the rather magical idea that they have autonomy and personality a long time before we see them in a gallery space.
The sketches are eventually transferred to the canvas, washes of colour eke out space, and place, and the application of fine details carve out circumstance, emotion and comedy, which plays an important part in the work. It runs parallel to her investigations into the psychology of our physicality, and our experiences existing with and within our bodies. We are encouraged to let go of the questions and concerns we have about our corporeal selves, instead seeking amused wonder at who and what we are, and our unescapable absurdity.
